Thursday, 08/18/2016: Henriette drove me to the airport in Sacramento and I flew over Phoenix to Flagstaff where my family was waiting for me. It was so stressful in Phoenix because I had to run to the other terminal and I caught my flight within the last call. But luckily everything went well and I found my family at the small airport. We drove to the Grand Canyon and saw the south rim. It is stunning! Seriously! It´s gigantic and steep and deep and super cool! It´s one of the things you must see in life! My mom always freaked out when I was standing right at the rim 😀 We stopped a few times at different places and we saw a huge deer. You count the endings of his antlers to find out how old the animal is (it´s probably not right) but it had 10 branches. So it was very valuable. :O Our last stop at the canyon was at the Desert View Watchtower here we climbed up the stairs and had the best view! We stayed in Tuba City for the night. It´s the Navaju Indians´ land. We saw a few Indians, like in the movies with long black hair and braided dark hair and the red skin. I sound like a tourist but I love to see these different cultures.
Friday, 08/19/2016: Today is the day! We are walking along John Wayne´s steps and look where John Ford filmed his movies. Yes, we were in Monument Valley. It´s THE valley you always see in Wild Western movies. It was pretty awesome. It´s huge and everywhere is red sand. The streets are “authentic” (in a bad condition 😀 ). My dad said all the time: “One earth quake and you can close this national monument :D” Actually he was right because these stone towers would fall together. Same in Arches National Park. But that is the impressing thing about these parks. We spend the night in Moab.
Saturday, 08/20/2016: Arches National Park, a 15min drive from our motel. It looks kinda similar to monument valley but it has those awesome arches, the holes. They were rubbed in the stone walls that are standing around their, with water and wind. I climbed up all the arches 😀 We even hiked a little bit (in vans). We slept in Montrose, Colorado and because we arrived in the late afternoon, we decided to visit the Black Canyon there. It´s …big. Not as impressive as the Grand Canyon but still nice! Like they said in training school in the beginning: “Everything is bigger in America.” And it is. We were hiking in Austria and southern Germany and we saw canyons but none of them were this big and deep. After driving in the valley to the river, the car´s breaks were smoking :O But all the car´s breaks were smoking and super-hot.
Sunday, 08/21/2016: We´re rolling, rolling, rolling. We drove through the Rocky Mountains in Colorado and it looks like Austria with one difference: there are no crash barriers at the side of the street. There is a 300ft deep valley on your right and nothing to stop you from falling down. TJ once said: “Well, Americans are probably better drivers, they don´t need barriers” and I answered: “That could be right but then I know that we don´t have a speed limit on our Autobahn.” Touché. Either way, we were driving on the edge of an abyss. After driving through the mountains we arrived at the Aztec ruins. It was nice. Not really spectacular because we saw so many ruins in Germany and at home that this was interesting but not as impressing as everything else we saw here on our journey. For this day we stopped in Santa Fe.
Monday, 08/22/16: Driving and more driving. Stop in Amarillo, TX to see the Cadillac Ranch and writing our names everywhere and then going on until we stopped for the night near Oakland City. It was always really impressing to see, that there was nothing. Seriously nothing, up to the horizon. No houses, no animals, no people. Everywhere we have been on this journey since I joined, I saw spaces as far as you can see with your eyes. Nothing for miles! I once drove through Nevada with Brelle and the boys and I was so impressed at that time too because there is just NOTHING. In the Indian reservations there are just red mountains and stones everywhere, sometimes grass or hey. In Colorado, it looks like in Austria but with less villages and in Texas, Oklahoma and Missouri look like northern Germany, absolutely flat but with fields and farmers. One difference: the fields are way, way bigger 😀 In Texas we saw this huge cow farm with at least 500 cows on one place like the one Lina and I saw on our way to LA. It smelled devilish!
Tuesday, 08/23/16: Before we left the state Oklahoma we made a quick stop at the Blue Whale. I read that it used to be one of the most recognizable attractions on Route 66. Well, I personally think that it is actually ugly and I don´t know why it is that famous… Sorry. Later we stopped at the world´s tallest massive totem pole which is really cool 😀 For the night we stopped close to St. Louis, MI.
Wednesday, 08/24/16: It´s exactly one year ago that I arrived in the USA. On that day we visited St. Louis a little bit and saw the Gateway Arch and the famous Route 66 bridge called Chain of Rocks Bridge. Later on that day we were driving on the original street and stopped at an old gas station and at a really small prison with only two cells. We also saw Gemini-giant and ended up in Chicago where Route 66 started. We saw the fountain and a little bit of downtown before we left to find a motel.
Thursday, 08/25/16: We are on our way to the Niagara Falls. We decided not to take the freeway and drive along Lake Erie. Can you believe that that lake is bigger than the state I come from? You could sink Hessen in Lake Erie. You can´t see the other end of the lake. It´s huge. By the way, Lake Erie is the lake that ends up at the Niagara Falls. We slept in a motel right at the waterside.
Friday, 08/26/16: We are still driving to the Niagara Falls. Nothing special happened on that day.
Saturday, 08/27/16: My family and I are going to see one of Nature´s biggest wonders: The Niagara Falls. They are really impressing. Not as tall as I expected them to be but they are so wide that it is stunning. We took a boat that was swimming on the river on the bottom of the falls. If we wouldn’t have worn the rain jackets we would have been completely wet. Well I got pretty wet because of the mist. I walked to the other side of the boat one time and so I got more wet than the rest of my family 😀 It was still pretty cool!
Sunday, 08/28/16: On the way to New York we stopped in Bethlehem to see where our cousin and his fiancé live and where B. Braun has its works (my mom also knows the family that owns B. Braun). We were driving around in that area and saw the country side. It´s not really special kinda like Germany. Bethlehem is a nice town/city. We decided to stop at a motel that is about half an hour away from NY so that we could take the train.
Monday, 08/29/16: The Big Apple, New York City. We took the train to Madison Square Garden and chose to take a tour that is similar to Big Bus but cheaper and because we took it for two days we could enjoy almost all of their tours. First we saw the typical tourist tour with the Empire State building, the Rockefeller Center, the Statue of Liberty, the Financial district, the flatiron building and so on. Later we saw the part of Manhattan where all the stars live, right next to Central Park. The bus took us to the Harlem (the quarter where a lot of black people live). We mostly sat in the bus on that day.
Tuesday, 08/30/16: Today we will get out of the bus to do stuff like going on the Empire State Building, touching the bull´s balls in the Financial district, taking pictures of everything… Did you know that that famous picture with the worker eating breakfast while sitting on a metal … was actually taking during the building of the Rockefeller Center, not the Empire State building?
Donnerstag, 18.08.16: Henriette fuhr mich zum Flughafen in Sacramento, von dem aus ich dann nach Phoenix flog. Mein Flug hatte Verspätung und ich hatte sowieso nicht mal 10min zum Umsteigen, doch das Glück war auf meiner Seite und ich erwischte meinen Flieger nach Flagstaff mit dem letzten Aufruf (ich bin über den Flughafen gerannt). In Flagstaff haben dann auch schon meine Eltern und meine Schwester auf mich gewartet und wir fuhren gemeinsam zum Südende des Grand Canyons. Es ist schon ziemlich beeindruckend, am Rand zu stehen und ohne Geländer nach unten zu schauen. Der Canyon ist doch wirklich ziemlich gigantisch. Es gehört zu den Dingen, die auf einer Löffelliste stehen sollten. Wir hielten an mehreren Punkten an, sahen ein Erdmännchen, dass mit Chips gefüttert wurde, einen riesigen Hirsch, keine 3m von uns entfernt mit einem riesigen Geweih und die Tusayan Ruinen. Zuletzt hielten wir am Wüstenblick-Wachturm an. Ein alter, wahrscheinlich von den Indianern gebauter Turm, von dem aus man einen Überblick über den Canyon nochmal hat. Shiiiiiiittt! Sehr cool 😀
Freitag, 19.08.16: Wir übernachteten in einem Indianerdorf namens Tula und sahen auch einige Indianer. Eigentlich waren da nur Touris und Indianer 😀 Auch schon so wie man sie aus den Filmen kennt, mit langen schwarzen Haaren und dunkler, roter Haut… aber mit normalen Klamotten 😀 Anyway. Heute laufen wir auf den Spuren John Waynes und sehen, wo John Ford seine Filme gedreht hat. Es war ziemlich cool im Monument Valley! Man durfte durch dieses Wüstental, das man aus den ganzen Westernfilmen kennt, mit dem eigenen Auto fahren, doch die Straßen waren, naja, nennen wir sie mal „authentisch“ 😀 Auf jeden Fall, war dies eins der coolsten Orte in Amerika!
Samstag, 20.08.16: Arches National Park. Ein „Arch“ (Artsch wird´s betont) ist ein Loch in den Steinwänden. Auch das ist ziemlich beeindruckend! Generell sind alle Nationalparks sehr beeindruckend, allein schon, weil sie so groß sind und die Natur so unterschiedlich von dem, was wir in Europa haben. Die Löcher jedenfalls wurden über Jahrhunderte hinweg von Wasser und Wind ausgehöhlt. In manche dieser Löcher konnte man hineinklettern (wenn man mich kennt, dann weiß man, dass ich das natürlich immer versucht habe :D) Nachdem wir weitergefahren sind und ein Motel in Montrose in Colorado gefunden haben, fuhren wir noch ein Stückchen weiter und sahen uns den Black Canyon (Schwarze Schlucht) an. Ich muss sagen, wir sind in Österreich und Deutschland gewandert und haben dort Schluchten und Klamm gesehen, aber keine davon waren soooooo groß wie diese. Auch sehr beeindruckend, aber nicht ganz so cool wie der Grand Canyon oder die anderen Nationalparks. Wir sind sogar bis runter ins Tal gefahren (~550m tief). Dort angekommen, haben unsere Bremsen ganz schön gequalmt und gestunken 😀
Sonntag, 21.08.16: Und es geht weiter… Wir fahren durch die Rocky Mountains in Colorado (sieht aus wie die Alpen im Prinzip mit nur einem Unterschied: keine Leitplanken, obwohl es dort ziemlich steil und tief runter geht) und kamen nach einigen Stunden bei den Aztekenruinen an, wo wir uns nicht ganz so lange aufhielten, da es dort nicht ganz so viel zu sehen gab. Wir übernachteten in Santa Fe.
Montag, 22.08.16: Ab jetzt sind wir fertig mit den Nationalparken und es werden nur noch Kilometer geschrubbt. Erster Stop für diesen Tag: Amarillo, Texas. Dort steht die Cadillac Ranch, eine Reihe verbuddelter Cadillacs (Autos) mitten auf dem Feld, die man mit Graffiti ansprühen kann und natürlich habe ich mich dort mehrfach verewigt 😀 Naja so lange, bis wieder jemand anders was drüber sprüht, also 10min später 😀 Wir fahren weiter entlang der Route 66 und zwischendurch sieht man für Stunden nichts. Einfach nichts so weit das Auge reicht. Ich war ja schon in mehreren Staaten in den USA und so kann ich sagen, dass Colorado sehr Österreich ähnelt und Texas, Oklahoma und Missouri eher Norddeutschland. Ich hab im Auto als gesagt: „Oh, es sieht ja hier aus wie zuhause!“ und Sophia war irgendwann total genervt und meinte nur: „Hör auf das zu sagen! Es sieht hier nicht aus wie zuhause, sondern eher wie im Norden Deutschlands!“ und ich darauf: „Ja, aber das ist ja fast zuhause.“ Denn die USA ist so groß, da findet man Deutschland einfach nur noch klein und Magdeburg zum Beispiel (wo ich studieren werde) ist keine Entfernung mehr 😀 Einmal sind wir in Texas an einem Bauernhof vorbei gefahren, eigentlich ganz normal, nur dass dort 500 Kühe auf einem Fleck standen :O Der Gestank war bestialisch!
Dienstag, 23.08.16: Bevor wir Oklahoma verlassen, halten wir noch mal an dem Blue Whale an, eine Sehenswürdigkeit aus der Hauptzeit der Route 66. Angeblich war das total berühmt, aber in Wirklichkeit nicht sehr spektakulär. Danach haben wir noch beim größten Totempfahl in der Welt angehalten, der wiederum ganz cool war. Die Nacht haben wir in der Nähe von St. Louis, Missouri verbracht.
Mittwoch, 24.08.16: Es ist nun exakt ein Jahr her, dass ich in New York gelandet bin und meine Reise gestartet hat. In der Zeit ist viel passiert 😀 Zuerst hielten wir in St. Louis und sahen uns das sogenannte Gateway Arch an (kann man nur schwer beschreiben, einfach mal die Fotos ansehen ;)) und dann die berühmte Route 66 Brücke über den Mississippi River. Da wir an dem Tag noch etwas Zeit haben, entscheiden wir, mal auf der originalen Straße, die ungefähr so kaputt ist wie bei uns die Landstraßen, zu fahren. Wir hielten bei einer alten Tankstelle an und steckten einen Pin in die Karte dort, so wie alle anderen Besucher auch, aber da war gar kein Platz mehr für unseren Pin 😀 Wir sahen außerdem ein mega kleines Gefängnis mit nur zwei Zellen und Gemini-Giant (ein Riese). Der Tag endete in Chicago, wo die Route 66 startet. Wir sind dort etwas durch die Stadt gelaufen und haben den offiziellen Start der Route gesehen.
Donnerstag, 25.08.16: Mit der Route 66 sind wir nun fertig. Weiter geht´s zu den Niagarafällen, aber da wir ja nicht nur fahren wollen, sondern auch mal was sehen möchten, fahren wir entlang des Lake Erie. Wir haben mal gegoogelt und herausgefunden, dass der so groß ist, dass man sogar ganz Hessen darin versinken könnte :O What? Ja genau, ganz Hessen und man hätte immer noch ein großes Ufer. Man kann sich also vorstellen, dass man nicht das andere Ufer sehen konnte, da der See so groß war.
Freitag, 26.08.16: Wir fahren weiter und weiter und weiter.
Samstag, 27.08.16: Heute werden meine Familie und ich eines der Weltwunder sehen: die Niagarafälle! Nicht ganz so hoch, wie wir dachten, aber gigantisch breit und richtig geil! Leider war dort nichts mehr natürlich, sondern alles voll mit asiatischen Touristen und Werbung. Wusstet ihr, dass die Niagarafälle eigentlich mitten in der Stadt liegen? :O Wir waren erst oben auf dem Aussichtspunkt und sind dann unten auf dem Fluss mit einem Boot an den Niagarafällen vorbeigefahren und zum Glück hatten wir diese Müllsack-Regenjacken an, denn durch den Dunst wurde man ziemlich nass 😀 Und jetzt muss man sich noch vorstellen, dass, bevor man das Wasserkraftwerk errichtete, die doppelte Wassermenge über die Klippe floß :O
Sonntag, 28.08.16: Auf dem Weg nach New York halten wir noch kurz in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania an, weil dort unser Cousin mit seiner Verlobten wohnt. Er war leider nicht da, sondern im Urlaub. Wir sind dann mal etwas darum gefahren und haben uns die Gegend angeschaut und dort sah es relativ ähnlich aus, wie bei uns in Hessen. Wir haben uns entschieden in einem Hotel zu bleiben, dass ungefähr ne Stunde von Ney York weg ist und dann den Zug zu nehmen.
Montag, 29.08.16: Der Big Apple wartet auf uns! Wir nehmen den Zug zum Madison Square Garden, die Konzerthalle in der Mitte New Yorks. Es ist leider schon Mittag als wir ankommen, doch wir entscheiden trotzdem eine Bustour zu nehmen (hat fast dasselbe für 2 Tage gekostet wie für 1 Tag) und uns New York erst einmal vom Bus aus anzuschauen. Ich persönlich muss sagen, dass ich New York nicht so geil finde, wie es immer gehypt wird. Es ist dreckig und eng und voll mit Menschen. Ich persönlich mag San Francisco viel mehr, denn es hat dieses Flair und die Leute sind netter in Kalifornien. Wie auch immer. Auf unserer ersten Bustour sehen wir das Empire State Building, das Rockefeller Center, die Freiheitsstatue, das Finanzviertel, das Bügeleisengebäude, das Soho, das Gebäude der Vereinten Nationen und vieles mehr. Auf unserer zweiten Tour sahen wir das Viertel am Central Park, wo die ganzen Stars leben, was ich mir eigentlich schwer vorstellen konnte, weil die Gebäude nicht so aussehen, als würden reiche Stars wie Denzil Washington oder die Frau von J.F. Kennedy dort wohnen, aber wem´s gefällt… Wir sahen außerdem das Harlem, das Viertel in dem die dunkelhäutigen Amerikaner leben.
Dienstag, 30.08.16: Heute werden wir auch mal den Bus verlassen und Fotos machen 😀 Zuerst ging´s auf das Empire State Building, dann haben wir die Eier des Stiers im Finanzdistrikt angefasst, denn das bringt finanzielles Glück 😀 Kennt ihr dieses ganz berühmte schwarz-weiß Foto von den Arbeitern auf der Metallstelze hoch über den Dächern New Yorks? Das Foto stammt von den Bauarbeiten am Rockefeller Center, nicht die des Empire State Buildings. Später waren wir auch noch am Timessquare und bei den M&M-Laden 😀 Ach ja, wir haben natürlich auch die Donald Trump Tower gesehen 😀
Mittwoch, 31.08.16: Unsere einzigartige Reise ist rum! Ich fliege noch einmal für 10 Tage zu meiner Gastfamilie und für meine Eltern geht es zurück nach Deutschland. Wir haben uns noch mal die Küste und den Strand angeschaut, bevor ich gegen Mittag am Flughafen saß und iwann abends von Henriette, dem neuen Au Pair, am Flughafen abgeholt wurde.
